The ladies of cattle world are known by many names. No, you can't call them all cows! A female cow who is 2 years old and having her first calf is called a "heifer", a cow who is 3 years old and having her second calf is a "second year heifer" and then after this journey they earn the rank of being called a 'cow'!
We spent 4 hours today giving the 'cows' a shot before their babies join us. Slowly I'm mastering the filling of syringes, giving shots and keeping a straight face when I get cow snot, poo or slobber on me!
The ladies are BIG - some of them are nearly 2,000 pounds! Many want to mosey along and cooperate while others will do everything they can to fight you! And regardless of being 9 months pregnant they can quickly have you looking to scramble across the nearest fence!
