irrigation 2013.

Irrigation season has begun - meaning spring is truly here and the summer scramble of busy farmers and ranchers begins.  My Dad is a work-a-holic on the ranch but even he feels like spring is the worst season because you just can't get everything done.

Part of our living arrangement includes taking care of the Encantada's water in trade for the house which Dave has taken on.  Dave has really enjoyed taking care of the water and this portion of the ranch in general.  It's truly a magical spot.  Dave has been able to learn a lot about the management of water and has proven he's no longer that city guy I met all those years ago :)

Elly and I have gone out with him a few times as the wind allows.  The wind here is incredible and I'm probably totally over protective and just can't stand taking Elly out in the wind.  Hopefully as it warms up we'll continue to get more outings because Mama needs to lose some baby weight.  Eek, that's an entirely different story.

intense grazing.

As spring is upon us and green grass is growing we are preparing for a new grazing style on the Encantada Ranch.  It will be really interesting and a lot of adjustment to see how this intense grazing vs. extended grazing program will change the health of our land.

I think it's fair to say that it is pretty standard for ranches to have large pastures and allow for long term grazing.  This has its perks - the cattle are self-efficient and don't need much care which is a relief after calving season and allows for ranchers to focus on other things: irrigation, field work, etc.  But it also has its drawbacks.  The cows will eat the grass down and continue to eat the grass never allowing it to re-grow to much height which affects how well the grass grows.

Research has shown great benefit in breaking pastures down into several small grazing areas encouraging your cattle to intensely graze a field to a height of 4-6" in a short period of time.  This obviously requires a more hands on approach as you rotate your cows to new pasture every day or so but it has shown tremendous results.  Neighbors of ours recently adapted this program and the change in their fields was impressive to say the least.  We are lucky to have a wonderful crew of "advisers" that work for the government that are guiding us through this process.

New electric fence going up...
Dave and I were first turned on to this concept through books we read by Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms (link here) when still leading our city life and dreaming of "one day".  Joel has become a well known advocate for small family farms and ranches.  I highly encourage you to read about his family story and their free thinking on the ranching process.

evening river.

We enjoyed a few nice days of warm weather and sunshine which really opened the river up.  Can't wait 'til it's warm enough to go swimming in!

series: barn details.

About this time last year I posted a photo series of old doors and building details from around the ranch and area - see my past posts titled creede,  door, door - take two, insulation and door - take three.  Thanks to my pal Justin for the idea of the original series!  I thought I would revisit this idea.  I am fascinated by the detail and beauty of the architecture in these old buildings and the people who built them and what their lives were like.  I can only imagine!

silhouette.

Am I the only person that wants to snatch this old lamp and hang it in their house?  We went on an afternoon walk around the ranch on an odd, sunny but cloudy day?!  The clouds and sun created a beautiful silhouette on this light in the corrals.

spring.

The river is starting to open up and you can see signs of spring around the ranch.  Snow is hiding in shady spots but is gone for the most part!  This winter cooped up in the casa has worn on us all and we can't wait to get outside!

This summer on this bit of the ranch we will be trying a new grazing program.  Intense grazing of smaller pastures and frequent rotations which some neighbors have had great results with.  I imagine it will be a lot of work to begin with but it will be an interesting experiment that I'm looking forward to.

neighbors.

We've been sharing the early morning hours with visits from our neighbors lately.  I'm not sure why they are so close to the house recently but I love watching these majestic creatures.  The first morning I was snapping pictures and noticed one of the kittens had gone in for a closer view as well :-)

Yesterday we had a doe in the yard while her fawn paced around outside the fence awaiting her return! The lilac bush is apparently a good treat.

summer dreams.

I was digging through some photos and practically started drooling upon shots of the summer.  I am SO ready!!!  Swimming in the river, irrigating, yard work - so excited!

I've got so many plans unrealistic dreams of things to accomplish this summer... starting a chicken flock, reviving our yard by getting rid of weeds, planting flowers and trees, taking baby girl swimming for the first time, planning construction of a new house, teaching Dave to ride a horse... and the list goes on and on in my head!  Must stop!

family outing.

We took a drive below the house on a beautiful, crisp evening.  It's still a little too cold for me to feel comfortable walking with Elly outside - probably my being neurotic again but I'm nervous!  The drive below was great and we all really enjoyed getting out of the house a bit, Ruby especially!  There were some drifts in the road which made me nervous about getting stuck but you can tell spring is coming - yea!

Below is my "artsy" photo of an old rusted culvert.

Look at baby girl sitting in the truck like a big girl - I can't believe how much she is growing and developing!  It's so exciting and scary all at once!  Eek!
